LONDON (Reuters) – The BBC announced on Friday that it has donated 1.42 million pounds (1.64 million euros) to charity, an amount equivalent to the proceeds generated by the controversial interview with Princess Diana in 1995.

The audiovisual group was in turmoil in 2021 following the publication of an independent report highlighting illegal methods by journalist Martin Bashir – false documents, lies… – to land an interview with Lady Di, who will reveal notably in this exchange the extramarital relationship of Charles with Camilla.

The BBC has since apologized.

“The BBC had announced its intention to donate to charity the proceeds of the interview with Diana, Princess of Wales, carried out in 1995 as part of Panorama,” the company said on Friday.

“Given the findings (of the investigation), we believe this is a fair and appropriate course of action.”

The donation was split equally between seven charities linked to the late princess, including public health and homeless organisations, the English National Ballet and the Diana Award.
