The Chinese social network TikTok is at the heart of a European Union investigation. Popular with millions of children and adolescents, the TikTok application is criticized in particular for “ alleged failures in the protection of minors “.

At the very end of last year, the European Union opened a formal investigation into the X.com network (formerly Twitter), for various breaches of European rules regarding content moderation and transparency. Today, it is TikTok’s turn to be targeted by the EU, this time for various failings in the protection of minors and a form of addiction. According to the commission: “ algorithmic systems (from TikTok) can stimulate behavioral addictions “.

TikTok in the sights of the European Union

The European Commission wants to ensure that the TikTok platform does what is necessary to protect both the physical well-being, but also the emotional well-being of young users on the old continent. The Chinese social network notably risks a fine of up to 6% of its annual global turnover, and a ban from operating in Europe.

Remember that the DSA (for Digital Services Act) came into force this Saturday, February 17, 2024, and aims for better digital regulation in Europe. In particular, it imposes obligations on giant digital platforms to combat illegal and harmful content online, while protecting users and promoting innovation.

Protection of minors, transparency of advertising, harmful content, addictive design…

Over the next few weeks/months, the European Commission will therefore examine the TikTok network in order to identify possible shortcomings. We mention in particular deficiencies in terms of the safety of minors, but also a lack of transparency on advertising content. Harmful content will also be scrutinized by investigators, as will possible risks linked to an addictive design.

To this is also added a certain “ tolerance » that TikTok could have regarding certain operations (disinformation, censorship, etc.) carried out by China.

On the TikTok side (as at Meta), we have recently put in place a whole series of measures aimed in particular at ensuring the safety of young people. The Chinese platform notably recalls having been “ the first to offer features and settings intended to protect adolescents, as well as to prevent those under 13 from accessing the platform “. To be continued.
