Google is bringing a handy feature to Chrome for desktop: Lens. This is a handy visual search and matching tool for analyzing an image found on the web.

Accessible since 2018 in France, Google Lens has recently benefited from further integration in Chrome. This rapprochement, observed since May 24, 2022, should make it much easier for Internet users to search for similar images on the web (and identical to the one that intrigues you), but also to target only certain details of the photo.

Google Lens is an image recognition tool that can detect elements of interest in a photo, thanks to artificial intelligence algorithms. It thus analyzes the snapshot and can offer the Internet user to target a search on an object, a building, a piece of clothing, a dish, etc. We knew that the arrival of Lens in Chrome was only a matter of time.

Image analysis in Lens comes to Chrome

The option is in the process of being rolled out and may not be available on all Chrome browsers — make sure you have up-to-date software. It is present on our instance and is simply activated: all you have to do is right-click on the photo of your choice to open the contextual menu and select “Search for the image with Google Lens”. That’s all.

Activating this option brings up on the right edge of the screen a section with the thumbnail image, and options depending on what the analysis may have produced.

The tool detects the presence of text, when there is, and provides translations. In the first case, it allows you to select it and copy it, in the second to translate it into French or another language – Google Lens can erase the original text and replace it with a translation of its own. This is a function that we already knew with the dedicated application.

Thus, Google Lens sometimes focuses on just one point in the photo – it can be a visible smartphone, a tie, a suit, etc. — and will look for visual matches. Several points of interest can appear on the same image. The scope of the detection can be manually adjusted to specifically target an element that the AI ​​would have missed.
