In this film available for free on TF1+, Catherine Zeta-Jones plays cartel queen Griselda Blanco…

One month after its launch on Netflix, Griselda continues its good progress. The drama series centered on the life of the Colombian drug trafficker – who is presented as the mentor of Pablo Escobar – traces her early years in Miami and the way in which she developed her thriving business, through murders and vendettas.

Before Sofia, there was Catherine

Worn by the flamboyant Sofia Vergara, the new creation from the producers of Narcos has long held first place in the weekly top 10. Proof that subscribers are fond of biopics, especially when they concern serious criminals. But before the Modern Family star transformed into Griselda, another renowned actress had tried her hand at the exercise.

In 2017, Catherine Zeta-Jones slipped into the skin of Griselda in the (TV) film Cocaine Godmother (translated into French The Queen of the Cartels), of which here is the synopsis:

Raised in the poverty of the slums of Medellín, Colombia, Griselda Blanco flew to the United States in the early 1970s. She quickly became the pioneer of cocaine trafficking in Miami, leading a vast network of drug traffickers whose businesses brought in nearly of $80,000,000 per month. Behind the scenes, this mother of four children, married three times (and responsible for the deaths of two of her husbands), mentor of Pablo Escobar, is as much adored as feared.

A TF1+ exclusive

The feature film was broadcast in France on television, only on the subsidiary channel TF1 series films and was not available for streaming before the recent arrival of the TF1+ platform. The popularity of the Griselda series on Netflix will surely have convinced the French group to highlight the version with Catherine Zeta-Jones.

lifetime

Thanks to TF1+ being free, spectators can discover this new iteration of the drug trafficker’s life… even if the reviews are far from rave. The participation in the project of Guillermo Navarro, director already working on Narcos, will not have helped the TV film to provide a striking and innovative look at this character who is said to have ordered the deaths of at least 200 people.

Also ignoring the fact that the actress bears no resemblance to the character she plays, the latter does not, according to the few criticisms visible on the AlloCiné file, have the build necessary to portray this great figure of banditry.
