Difficult rescue – paraglider crash: man (57) seriously injured

A 57-year-old paraglider pilot crashed in the Dachstein Mountains area on Saturday afternoon and was seriously injured.

At around 1 p.m., the 57-year-old from the Wels-Land district went on paragliding flights from Stoderzinken with his 21-year-old son. In the Dachstein Mountains area at an altitude of around 2,300 meters, the 57-year-old’s paraglider suddenly collapsed, probably due to gusts of wind, and the man fell uncontrollably around 100 meters into the depths. Despite a rescue parachute being deployed immediately, the 57-year-old hit the ground in a steep rocky gully south of the summit of the Scheichenkoppen and was seriously injured. The son was able to observe the accident from the air and called the emergency services. Due to the weather and local conditions, a rescue by helicopter was not possible for the time being. The injured man was brought terrestrially towards the summit by members of the Ramsau am Dachstein mountain rescue service, where he was rescued by the Martin 1 emergency medical helicopter via Taubergung. He was flown to the LKH Schwarzach.
