Digital inkjet printing seen by BOBST: the printing cluster that is revolutionizing label production

“A compact, reliable, connected, scalable and ecological solution: these are priorities for any choice of technology” Article by Stelios Manousakis, BOBST Digital Technology Director

Having become almost inseparable, these criteria now form the basis of successful and sustainable innovations in high-tech sectors.

It is precisely on the basis of these principles that BOBST created the Mouvent Cluster printing group.

It is the first time in the history of inkjet printing that such a compact and powerful device has been created thanks to the latest advances in 3D printing technology. The Mouvent Cluster is a unit composed of four inkjet printheads and their ink control system, encapsulated in a very compact housing. And its small frame is not only advantageous in terms of size. It also reduces the number of moving parts while achieving optimal positioning of internal elements and better arrangement of cables and connections.

This unique design offers unprecedented benefits.

Having fewer moving parts reduces maintenance requirements and the risk of failure. But the precise positioning of the trim also allows for faster, more precise temperature control and shorter fluid delivery lines (less temperature loss and pressure equalization)

The integrated control unitsink and temperature of the Cluster Mouvent also obey a very simple architectural rule: each unit is autonomous and each inkjet printhead is controlled by a separate closed-loop device, equipped with its own pressure control systems and temperature.

It is a radical technological change in the world of inkjet printing, which, by offering total control of the inkjet, guarantees total independence on the printing speed, the coverage of ink or level of detail in the printed file.

The main advantage of ink control at such a short distance from the inkjet and in a closed loop is the ink drop size consistency and system efficiency over long production cycles.

Elimination of ink mist, absolute printhead temperature control and uninterrupted production without having to take breaks to clean the device or let it cool down.

Connectivity is also one of the fundamental design principles for reliable performance. Performance based on on-the-fly data analysis and algorithmic calculations, for optimal control and immediate adaptation.

In summary, the cluster system has its own advanced modular intelligence to re-adapt when needed while connected to a central high-speed server and image data stream.

The “brain” of the system, theelectronics, is a fully programmable device. This system has been designed using a deterministic calculation method, in order to offer scalable performance, with reduced power consumption and greater operational security.

Updates and adaptations can be performed directly on the press and triggered remotely by technical support engineers, ensuring that the technology lives up to its promises.

In a nutshell, BOBST’s Cluster technology takes inkjet printing to the next level by opening up new horizons in the packaging industry. Want to know more? Contact us for a product demonstration at our Competence Center in Firenze, Italy or Alpharetta, USA
