Egypt and Turkey want to improve their diplomatic relations.
For this purpose, ambassadors are sent to the other country.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s election victory plays a central role in this.
Relations between Turkey and Egypt have been strained since 2013. The political dispute escalated when the Turkish government repeatedly described the army’s ousting of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi as an illegitimate military coup. In addition, the two states supported different parties in the Libyan war. Now a phone call has improved diplomatic relations.
After Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s election victory, Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called his Turkish counterpart and congratulated him on the election success. It was also agreed to improve diplomatic relations between the states. The Egyptian presidency announced late on Monday evening that both states want to send ambassadors to the other country again after a ten-year break.
Better relationships already in the last few months
In the previous months, the two nations were already getting closer. For example, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Samih Schukri visited Turkey after the devastating earthquakes in February. His Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, came to Cairo in March. Cavusoglu said at the time that a meeting between the two presidents was also being planned.
