Red Monza celebrates Leclerc’s Ferrari pole

Formula 1 drivers Mick Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel disappoint in qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix. They are already eliminated in Q1. The Tifosi in Monza are not interested in that. They celebrate the pole for Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, world champion Verstappen expects a penalty.

With the cheers of the Tifosi, Ferrari fan favorite Charles Leclerc (Monaco) took pole position for the Italian Grand Prix (Sunday, 3 p.m./Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de) secured. The 24-year-old turned the fastest lap in qualifying at the Scuderia’s home game in Monza in 1:20.161 minutes and relegated world champion Max Verstappen (+0.145 / Netherlands) in the Red Bull and his teammate Carlos Sainz jr. (+0268/Spain) in second and third place.

Like almost half of all drivers, Verstappen and Sainz are also penalized for changing the engine or gearbox on the starting grid. Leclerc took his eighth pole of the year and the 17th of his career.

Mick Schumacher (Haas) and Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) benefit from the flood of penalties. Schumacher was only last, Vettel ended up in 17th place – but both are flushed forward in the starting line-up. Curious: Schumacher also receives a 15-place penalty, but at least three competitors receive an even greater handicap and have to start from the back of the field.

More soon.
