The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max incorporate a new notch which will also be a dynamic area to display all your alerts.

This new notch was the little surprise of this presentation of the iPhone 14 Pro.

The iPhone 14 Pro reduces its notch by 30%

We have already known for several weeks that Apple was going to review the area hosting the 3D Face ID camera with its new premium smartphones. Almost five years after its introduction, the notch has always been pointed out by many users and the brand has now revised its size by almost 30%.

The notch is made up of a pill and a punch. Apple chose to unite the two elements in a single block by turning off the pixels between the front cameras of the iPhone for design reasons, but not only.

The Apple has indeed had fun using this previously useless space to display information and offer new interactions to users. For the occasion, the notch now has a name all its own: the Dynamic Island.

Apple does not try to hide the notch, but highlights it with Dynamic Island

This area is now fully interactive. It will initially be used to display alerts and controls based on running applications. If you’re playing music, the play buttons will nestle into the notch. Just long press it to open a small window and change title, without having to leave your application or go through the control center.

The Dynamic Island will also integrate with many applications, home like the timer, or in Apple Maps to permanently display the next direction to follow during your route.

If you receive a call, the notch will expand to allow you to make the call. The AirPods will show up in it each time you connect to give you the battery level as well. Even the Face ID icon appears in this area when using Apple Pay.

Apple explains that it has worked to create different animations for each application to improve the user experience. The notch grows, shrinks and changes shape smoothly with use.

The manufacturer intends to multiply the possibilities of use and will offer third-party developers to use it through an API. Applications using Live Activities, these persistent notifications on the locked screen allowing you to follow the score of a match or the arrival of your meal in delivery, will be able to lodge in the Dynamic Island when you use your iPhone 14 Pro.
