The Chinese brand Geely wants to strengthen its high-end catalog and is launching a new brand, Galaxy. Seven models are planned over two years, three of which will arrive this year.

The Chinese automotive group Geely, which has owned Volvo since 2010 and which collaborates in particular with Mercedes and Renault, has announced the launch of a new brand of high-end electric vehicles: Geely Galaxy. The first vehicles will hit the track before the end of the year in China.

Seven vehicles planned: four plug-in hybrids and three electric

The automaker showcased this premium brand at an event held in Hangzhou late last week. In addition to the Galaxy Light electric concept car, three models have already been made official: two hybrids and a 100% electric sedan. The company is planning seven vehicles over the next two years (four plug-in hybrids and three all-electric, the latter belonging to a sub-range dubbed Galaxy E).

The three vehicles planned for China this year are the Geely Galaxy L7, pictured below (a hybrid SUV that will be available from Q2 2023), the Geely Galaxy L6 (a sedan expected in Q3) and a sedan fully electric called Geely Galaxy E8, which will arrive in the fourth quarter. The rest of the program has not been revealed, but we can expect two other Galaxy E vehicles and two other rechargeable hybrids.

Geely puts the rubber on all aspects: software, hardware and mechanics

Regarding the characteristics of the vehicles, those of this Galaxy series will be the first to benefit from the Aegis battery security system, which protects in particular in the event of a collision. The computer system, based on the Wise Star Cloud, is also supposed to improve battery life, around 20% according to the brand.

In terms of operating system, Galaxy vehicles will benefit from the new Galaxy N system. Supported by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155 SoC, this operating system offers a system boot time of only 0.5 seconds, according to Geely, and promises a very fast response time. Overall, all this is part of the Smart Geely 2025 strategy. The manufacturer is relying on powerful hardware, supported by a complete ecosystem, in particular supported by functionalities in the cloud as well as the brand’s satellite network. In this regard, Geely Holding Group plans to deploy 72 satellites by 2025.

More specifically on plug-in hybrid vehicles, the models will utilize the latest generation of Geely Auto’s NordThor hybrid engine, namely the NordThor 8848, as well as a three-speed NortdThor DHT transmission (dedicated hybrid transmission). In practice, for the Geely Galaxy L7 SUV, Geely promises a passage from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.5 seconds and a consumption in real conditions of 5.23 liters per 100 kilometers. This autonomy would allow the Galaxy L7 to travel 1,370 kilometers on a single fill-up.

The company will provide more details on the all-electric model when the time comes. Finally, be aware that the firm also operates other brands of electric vehicles: Geometry, consumer vehicles, and Zeekr, more upscale models.
