VSKnown as Britain’s L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue with its hundreds of antique dealers, Petworth has long lived the high life. The attraction of Petworth Place – the English Versailles – and its rich collections, the proximity of Goodwood and Cowdray Estate (respectively famous for their car races and their international polo competitions) and the presence of a national park made Petworth a cultural epicenter just 1.5 hours south of London.
After September 11, however, with the departure of American collectors, the village declined, losing one by one businesses, tourists and vitality. It was reckoning without Nicola Jones…
