Microsoft Edge has an interesting new feature: an integrated tool to test the speed of your internet connection. This announcement comes as part of the update of the stable version of the browser.
A few days ago, the Redmond firm published version 124 of Microsoft Edge. A new version mainly aimed at businesses since the latter contained lots of new features for professionals. Now, and while waiting for the publication of Edge 125 by the end of May, the company led by Satya Nadella rewards us with a new update. If this version 124.0.2478.80 is mainly content to provide security-related fixes, it nevertheless delivers a new functionality to users of the stable version of the browser: an integrated tool to measure the speed of your internet connection!
Microsoft Edge now has an Internet speed test tool built in, but…
The Speed Test tool is now accessible from the Microsoft Edge sidebar by default. As a reminder, this already includes several rather practical tools, including the clock, the calculator, a translator, a dictionary and even a unit converter.
In theory, the arrival of this new tool in the sidebar should allow connection tests to be carried out quickly without having to leave the current page. However, clicking the Start button does not run the speed test directly in the sidebar. No, instead Edge just opens a new Bing tab and redirects the user to its dedicated speed tester.
A somewhat surprising choice given that the applications and tools housed in the sidebar are supposed to be usable without having to change tabs, as our colleagues at Neowin.
An update that fixes critical security vulnerabilities
Besides the (partial) integration of the speed test tool, Microsoft Edge version 124.0.2478.80 mainly focuses on security. In particular, it fixes two critical vulnerabilities of the Chromium project:
- CVE-2024-4331: This “Use after free” flaw in the “Picture in Picture” functionality of Google Chrome (versions prior to 124.0.6367.118) could have allowed a remote attacker to corrupt system memory via a malicious HTML page.
- CVE-2024-4368: Similar to the previous one, this flaw concerned Chrome’s Dawn web rendering engine (versions prior to 124.0.6367.118). It would also have allowed a remote attacker to corrupt system memory via a fraudulent HTML page.
If the update did not occur automatically on your side, know that you can force Edge to switch to version 124.0.2478.80 by simply going to this address from your browser: “ edge://settings/help “.
