The year 2023 was marked by a record number of visits to movie piracy sites. This increase indicates ever-increasing demand for pirated content, despite the numerous attempts by the authorities to combat this phenomenon. The increase in these activities also highlights the growing difficulty of effectively combating this practice and the need to adopt more sophisticated and effective strategies.

In response to the intensification of sanctions against piracyas evidenced by the T411 case where the creators of the site were sentenced to 3 years in prison and a record fine of 489 million euros, pirate sites develop workaround strategies. These tactics include changing domain names frequently to avoid blocks. This ability to adapt highlights the determination of piracy platforms to maintain their activities, despite the intensification of legal and regulatory measures.

Video piracy in 2023: boom in Canada and decline in Brazil

The study, based on data from MUSO and Kearney, reveals significant changes in hacking behavior internationally. Ranking countries according to the volume of piracy and its evolution, the report identifies four distinct categories: “hotspots” where piracy is high and growing, “regions in remission” with high but declining piracy, “growth risks” where piracy is low but increasing, and finally, the “positive signs” where it is weak and decreasing. Among the countries at the top of the ranking, Canada particularly stands out with an increase of almost 50% in visits to pirate sites between 2018 and 2023, exceeding 90 visits per citizen.

In contrast, countries like Brazil show a downward trend, probably due to frequent repressive actions against piracy. At the same time, countries like India, Nigeria and Ghana are experiencing a rapid rise in piracy, attributed to increasing access to high-speed internet. The case of the United States is intriguing, it is classified as “growth risk” due to the increase in its piracy rate, despite a high absolute volume but relatively low visits per capita. This global overview provides a clear overview of the development of video piracy in various countries.
