Discussions are ongoing – Neusiedler Lake National Park should be bigger!

The national park in the Neusiedl am See district was launched in 1993. Now it is to be expanded.

There have been discussions about this matter for a long time. Now we’ll soon have to get down to business. There has already been an information event for landowners and residents, and almost all signs point to green: According to all those responsible, the Neusiedler See – Seewinkel National Park will be expanded to Illmitzer Hotter this year. The protected area is currently 10,000 hectares in size, 5,000 of which are natural zones and are located on both Burgenland and Hungarian territory. The national park is a gem both in terms of nature conservation and tourism. “We have between 40 and 50,000 visitors to the national park information center in Illmitz every year,” says national park director Hannes Ehrenfeldner. The water situation was also good and visitor-friendly this year, at least in the areas near the lake. “There was water practically all the time, which ensured our success at the Bird Experience,” says Ehrenfeldner. Adapting the program for the guests was also important for visitor success. In summer there are excursions in the morning and evening, but now in winter they start around lunchtime. The program for 2024 is already ready and will soon be available in paper form. Information is also available at nationalparkneusiedlersee.at and 02175/3442.
