After Netflix, it’s Disney’s turn to declare war on password sharing © Postmodern Studio / Shutterstock

After starting to increase its prices, Disney+ is in turn launching a fierce fight against account sharing. If the entertainment giant is currently targeting the United States and Canada, it’s hard not to imagine that these new measures will soon arrive here.

At the end of last year, the big-eared giant Disney began to warn its subscribers (in Canada) of its desire to put an end to account sharing. The American giant was thus following in the footsteps of its rival (and compatriot) Netflix, which had already implemented similar measures. Disney CEO Bog Iger had promised to resolve the issue of password sharing in 2024, and the firm is clearly keen not to waste time.

Netflix and Disney, same fight

Today, Disney is moving up a gear, since the restrictive measures are now extended to the United States. The group has already started to distribute emails to its subscribers, to notify them of the implementation of new general conditions of use of the Disney+ service.

These obviously include new specific restrictions regarding the sharing of passwords. Note that the measure concerns Disney+, but also another very popular platform across the Atlantic, namely Hulu.

Soon in France ?

Among the new terms of use at Disney, we can read: “ You cannot share your subscription outside of your household. By “home”, we mean all the devices associated with your main personal residence and which are used by the people who reside there “.

On the Disney side, we obviously took care to observe what happened on the competition side, with the restriction on password sharing at Netflix. Despite numerous complaints on the networks, this new measure ultimately had very little impact on the American giant, which continued to progress. Enough to motivate Disney executives to carry out the same operation.

Disney announces that it reserves the right to take action against people who continue to share their account. Currently, it is difficult to know when the American giant will begin to crack down on Disney+, but in an email sent to Hulu subscribers, the date of March 14, 2024 was brought forward.

Obviously, these new restrictions should soon affect Europe. As Scar said: be ready.

Disney+

  • Disney classics in one place
  • Exclusive Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars series
  • A reasonable price (except in 4K)

It was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. Disney+ is not a rival to Netflix, but a complementary offering, aimed particularly at children (young and old) and more broadly towards the family. The Star universe, for its part, is starting to bear fruit by offering more and more original or exclusive series. It’s a shame, however, that the service continues to lose features and gain constraints.
