This hasn’t happened for 7 years, Disney is not at the top of the global box office in 2023.

By owning Pixar and Marvel, not to mention its own productions, Disney has reigned supreme over the global box office for several years now. However, in 2023, despite the launch of various blockbusters, the American group has failed to convince, and must cede its first place to another cinema giant… Universal.

Disney (narrowly) cedes its leadership position to Universal

Indeed, despite a total of 4.8 billion dollars, generated by just under twenty films, Disney was unable to do anything against Universal. The other American giant has launched a total of 24 productions in 2023, enough to generate more than $4.9 billion in revenue… and (barely) pass the big-eared group.

On the Disney side, however, we have released certain cartridges, notably Indiana Jones 5 and Elementary, but these have not had the expected success. Disney also distinguished itself this year with certain failures, including Ant-Man 3 and The Marvels, without forgetting “ the last Disney », Wish, which did not appeal to spectators.

Note that no Disney film has exceeded the billion-dollar mark in 2023, a first since 2014. For comparison, in 2019, Disney had raked in no less than 11 billion dollars in a single year.

Warner Bros and Sony a step behind

Conversely, at Universal, we were not only able to count on a greater number of productions (24 films at Universal compared to 17 at Disney), but also on certain immense successes, starting with Super Mario Bros. The Movie (1, 3 billion dollars), but also Oppenheimer.

Alongside Disney and Universal, the 2023 podium is completed by Warner Bros, with a total of $3.8 billion generated. The firm was notably driven by the success of Barbie (1.4 billion), but also the recent Wonka.

In fourth position, we find Sony, with 2 billion dollars generated, notably thanks to Spider-Man and Napoleon, neck and neck with Paramount Pictures.
