Among the projects planned during Walt Disney’s lifetime was Beauty and the Beast, which he had tried to finance in the studio’s early days in the 1930s and again during the 1950s, but was never satisfied with the proposed script. It was only with the success of The Little Mermaid that the House of Mickey decided to give this story a chance.

In the introductory sequence of the film, we can read on the stained glass windows of the castle the Latin words “Vincit qui se vincit” (literally “Vaincra qui qui se vincit”). This motto echoes the challenge posed to the Beast, who must himself triumph over his selfish nature to seduce Belle.

And the ending also carries a message, as Beauty and the Beast is dedicated to producer and lyricist Howard Ashman, who died before the film was completed. At the end of the credits, we can thus read: “To our friend Howard Ashman, who gave a siren its voice, and a beast its soul. We will be eternally grateful to you.”
