You are probably familiar with Pixar’s animated films. But have you ever really paid attention to their posters? That’s what we’re going to check with these nine highly zoomed poster details…
Pixar, founded in 1979, was originally called the Graphics Group, a computer division of Lucasfilm that specialized in computer graphics techniques, working on films like Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, or The Secret of the Pyramid. It will not take its current name until seven years later, in 1986, when it was taken over by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, initially led by Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith.
Prior to getting into animation, Pixar was a high-end computer hardware company, which never really took off, quickly threatening to bankrupt the company with accumulated debts of millions of dollars. It was at the beginning of the 90s that she decided to give up this activity to launch herself fully into animation, following a few productions of computer-animated advertisements for several brands.
In May 1991, Pixar signed a contract with Disney for the production of three animated feature films. The very first will be Toy Story, which will be a huge success around the world, earning more than 350 million dollars at the box office. Success that will be confirmed over the years with three sequels, and the very recent spin-off Buzz Lightyear.
In the early 2000s, relations between the two companies deteriorated sharply, the points of disagreement between Steve Jobs and Michael Eisner, the CEO of Disney, seeming to reach a point of no return. Finally, in 2006, discussions resumed following the arrival of Robert Iger at the head of the firm with the big ears, and Disney acquired Pixar for 7.4 billion dollars.
Since its debut in 1991, the studios have had a string of enormous cinema successes, four of which have exceeded one billion dollars in revenue: The Incredibles 2, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, and Finding Dory.
