DisplayPort 2.1, 8K@165Hz, FSR 3 and HYPR-RX: AMD Emphasizes RDNA 3 Features

As if to show its capacity for innovation, AMD wanted to highlight many technologies around RDNA 3.

At NVIDIA, the launch of the GeForce RTX 4090 coincided with that of Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) version 3. At AMD, the announcement of the Radeon RX 7900XTX and RX 7900XT is an opportunity to do the same and, perhaps, be, to go a little further.

FidelityFX Super Resolution passes third

Aware of the delay it has taken in this quest for the most efficient and most commonly used super sampling solution, AMD has made it a point of honor to launch and push the FidelityFX Super Resolution, better known by the acronym FSR.

In the space of a few months, FSR, then FSR 2 and even FSR 2.1 succeeded each other, but with FSR 3, AMD promises to go further. Both graphics cards will have two DP 2.1 ports as well as a USB-C DP 2.1 port. The stated objective is therefore to allow video games in 8K by combining DP 2.1 and FSR 3 technology. The first makes it possible to exceed the 8K@60 Hz limit of DisplayPort 1.4 while the second opens the way to remarkable fluidity , even on the heaviest games.

Laconically, AMD pointed out that 8K monitors are on the way, including Samsung’s Odyssey Neo G9. Finally, logically, DisplayPort 2.1 explodes the refresh rate limits of lower resolutions: up to 480 Hz in 4K and 900 Hz in 1440p.

HYPR-RX: one app to rule them all

Quickly, almost to close its conference, AMD mentioned a new acronym, the HYPER-RX. It is a tool rather designed for less expert users who want to take advantage of the latest advances without having to get their hands dirty.

AMD has here taken the example of Dying Light 2. The game, published by the Poles of Techland, has the advantage of being compatible with multiple AMD technologies such as FSR, Boost, Anti-Lag… Nevertheless, if the contributions of these techniques are real, it is sometimes necessary to look at how they work to find out how to combine them and get the most out of them.

HYPER-RX sets out to do it all with no user intervention other than pressing a button to initiate all available optimizations. On Dying Light 2, AMD announces +85% performance with only 1/3 of the latency. HYPER-RX is due out in the first half of 2023.
