Nepal has just banned TikTok, and announced that its decision was effective immediately. This is a new setback for the Chinese social network, whose activities arouse the mistrust of the authorities of many countries.

2023 was a particularly tumultuous year for TikTok. After a ban in the United States at the end of 2022, the application was banned on government devices in several Western countries, as well as European authorities, for reasons of national security. The hearing of its CEO Shou Zi Chew before the American Congress last March did not help its affairs. A bill submitted, for example, aspires to ban it entirely in the country, while the state of Montana has legislated to ban its downloading.

After India, Nepal takes on TikTok

The situation is also complicated in certain Asian countries. TikTok has been banned from the huge Indian market since 2020, after an armed conflict on the Chinese border. Now, it is Nepal’s turn to make a similar decision, days after the introduction of a new rule requiring social networks to establish liaison offices in the country. TikTok is the third most used platform nationally in Nepal.

According to the authorities, the application constitutes a “ disruptive to social harmony », spreading malicious content. Telecommunications operators are already responsible for applying this measure. Local media report more than 1,600 cases of cybercrime linked to TikTok over the past four years in Nepal.

For its part, Pakistan has temporarily banned the app at least four times since October 2020, while TikTok’s online shopping service was shut down in Indonesia last month.

A link with Beijing pointed out

Although TikTok strives to show its credentials, many governments denounce the links of its parent company, ByteDance, with Beijing. Western authorities fear that the platform will be used for espionage, as well as to spread propaganda. Data leaks from the US to China in recent years have worsened the situation of the social network.

Despite these regulatory debacles, TikTok remains incredibly popular among younger users. In fact, more than 80% of social media users aged 16 to 24 use the platform.
