Dissolution after criticism – A single vote decided on the memorial association

The “Austrian Friends of Yad Vashem” association is history after 21 years. On Wednesday evening, at a general meeting in Linz, the members decided to dissolve the association, which had to contend with criticism due to the controversial appointment of politicians as board members. By the way, it depended on just one vote!

No candidates, no election: The “Austrian Friends of Yad Vashem” association – which supports the commemoration of the Holocaust by the Nazis – had to cancel the board election scheduled for Wednesday at short notice because individual applicants on the list of candidates had concerns about the compatibility of work and volunteer work The list of politicians around the Wels FPÖ mayor Andreas Rabl, who said they wanted to ensure the continued existence of the association, had already withdrawn their candidacy after criticism. And the idea of finding a transitional arrangement was also unenforceable – the board had already resigned. A successor organization was being considered. Therefore, a vote on the dissolution was due at the general meeting on Wednesday in Linz. “Two thirds would have to vote for it,” said spokesman Georg Schuster and in the end a single vote – out of 103 valid votes – decided on the dissolution after 21 years. A successor organization is being considered that is less rigid – because the now dissolved association, which started with ten members and grew to 870, required a two-thirds majority for almost every decision.
