“Disturbing” or “pretentious”: this film prohibited for those under 18 will scandalize you!

It is surely the most scandalous film of its director, it comes out on July 12 in Director’s Cut version!

From July 12, Les Films du Losange is offering a Lars Von Trier retrospective at the cinema with the re-release of his films in restored versions. Nymphomaniac, one of the director’s most provocative and controversial works, is programmed in its Director’s Cut version.

Nymphomaniac is the crazy and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey, from her birth to the age of 50, told by the main character, Joe, who is a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac. On a cold winter’s evening, the charming old bachelor Seligman discovers Joe in an alley, badly beaten.

After taking her home, he tends to her wounds and asks her about her life. Seligman listens intensely to Joe telling him in eight successive chapters the story of his life with multiple ramifications and facets, rich in associations and incidents along the way.

Released in cinemas in two parts in January 2014, Nymphomaniac was then offered in its long uncensored version on blu-ray and DVD. It is this version, prohibited for those under 18, that we will be able to see on the big screen.

EXPLICIT AND SCANDAL SEX

Lars Von Trier’s feature film contains very raw and explicit sex sequences which earned him a ban in several countries, including Turkey. Note that actors in pornographic films dubbed “traditional” actors for sex scenes.

For the illusion to be perfect, only the trunks of the main actors were kept. The part of the body below the belt – that of porn actors – has been added digitally. This technical prodigy allowed the director to film wide shots as well as close shots.

“We filmed the actors playing sex scenes and then the stunt doubles, who they actually had sex with, and it was in post-production that we brought the two together”explained producer Louise Velsth in 2013.

If Nymphomaniac therefore brings together simulated and non-simulated sex scenes in the same shot, other films have opted for real antics. Find out which ones in our file dedicated to some hot sequences from the big screen.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

“Lars put a lot of things into this one. It’s about religion, about God, about philosophy. There’s so much to discuss about the film”she added to the microphone of The Hollywood Reporter.

Customary of provocation and scandal, Lars Von Trier had already sparked controversy even before the release of the film. Indeed, the director had gradually unveiled Nymphomaniac teasers with posters showing the main actors in full orgasm. Thus, the filmmaker set the tone before revealing the first images of his work.

THE STACY REVELATION

If Lars Von Trier summoned a faithful collaborator for the main role in the person of Charlotte Gainsbourg, the filmmaker needed a young actress to play the adolescent version of Joe.

Totally unknown until then, the French actress Stacy Martin caught the eye of the director. Initially a model, Stacy shot many explicit nudity scenes, notably with Shia LaBeouf.

Since then, the 33-year-old actress has starred in numerous films including Le Redoutable with Louis Garrel, Lovers with Pierre Niney, Last love with Vincent Lindon or Amanda with Vincent Lacoste. We could see her recently on Prime Video in La Graine, released on May 3.

Nymphomaniac Director’s Cut was released in theaters on July 12.
