do the 10 best-selling contracts serve the best rates?

La Tribune de l’Assurance published a few months ago its ranking of the 100 most popular life insurance contracts, i.e. those which were the most subscribed to by savers. In this classification, certain contracts are no longer marketed but still have a very large number of holders. But does their performance match their popularity?

Announcements of life insurance rates have been pouring in since the beginning of January. Each insurer, bank, fintech reveals the remuneration of its contracts. But will they bring in more than the expected average of 2.5% and compete with the Livret A maintained at 3% throughout 2024? Here is the 2023 remuneration of the 10 largest life insurance contracts.

1 – Predissime 9 of Crdit Agricole

The Crdit Agricole bank’s flagship range is the most popular contract according to 2022 figures from The Insurance Tribune. End, 2022, no less than 2.9 million savers held one of these contracts and mainly its new version, Predissime 9 series 2 which gives access to automatic management options and pilot management (Mandate Selection) from 5,000 euros of savings. After a clear rebound in 2022, from 0.65% to 1.90%, the remuneration of Predissime 9 Serie 2 reached 2.40% in 2023. A rate which can be improved depending on the share of units of account held by the saver: 2.80% from 30% UA and 3.20% from 50%.

A rate slightly below the average expected for the year 2023 of 2.5%.

2 – 3D nuances of the Savings Bank

It is no longer the bank’s flagship contract since it is no longer marketed. But the Nuances 3D life insurance contract remains distributed in more than 2.5 million copies. After having yielded 1.35% in 2022, this contract offers, for the year 2023, a rate 2.15%. Savers who invested more than 50% of their savings in units of account were able to benefit from a rate bonus 3.65%.

3 – Life Insurance Plan (Crdit Mutuel)

Crdit Mutuel’s flagship contract recorded remuneration for the year 2023 ranging from 2.60% 3.25% depending on the risks taken on the contract and the category of customer. Savers therefore benefited from a bonus rate of 0.25% for contracts with between 25 and 50% UA and 0.50% for those invested more than 50% in UA. The yield is up half a point compared to 2022 since the base rate was 2.10% on Plan Assurance Vie, in its Essential version.

At the end of 2022, Crdit Mutuel had 1.8 million Life Insurance Plan contracts in its Essential versions, accessible from 50 euros of savings, Advantage from 15,000 euros and Privilge above 50,000 euros.

4 – Multiple placements 2 (BNP Paribas Cardif)

At the end of 2022, 964,977 Multiplacements 2 contracts were recorded by BNP Paribas. The bank’s famous contract reaches a 3% return in 2023 compared to 2% last year. A great performance which surpasses that of the first four most popular contracts and places Multiplacements 2 in the top 10 of the best rates served in 2023. Be careful however, the return does not reach that of the Livret A since social security contributions still have to be deducted by 17.2%.

5 – Floriane from Crdit Agricole

The bank finds itself a second time in this ranking of the most subscribed life insurance policies. The Floriane contract is held by 816,140 savers and accessible through an entry ticket of 5,000 euros and an investment of at least 20% in units of account. The performance of its fund in euros reached 2.31% at least in 2023, which may rise up to 3.11% depending on UC share. The Floriane 2 contract offers the same returns.

6 – Life Booklet (Macif)

Even if Livret Vie is no longer sold, this life insurance contract still had 782,608 subscribers at the end of 2022. It pays off in 2023 height of 2.50%, sharp increase compared to 2022 (1.60%). This single-support contract therefore allows you to invest 100% of your savings in the fund in euros. Livret Vie is now replaced by the contract, this time multi-support Multi Life at the insurer Macif, whose performance reached 2.70% in 2023.

7 – Maple (Societe Generale)

According to The Insurance Tribunethe entry-level contract of SG (formerly Socit Générale) is held by 747,130 customers at the end of 2022. The yield fluctuates between 2.85% and 3.72%. The Squoia contract, aimed at a wealthier clientele and its half a million holders, offered the same base rate for this year 2023. The Squoia bonus is increased to 3.73%.

8 – Multi-sport collective contract (Afer)

The year 2023 is not the year of savers associations and in particular of Afer and its Multisupports collective contract. With a yield 2.22% compared to 2.01% last year, the association finds itself among the worst performers in 2023. 681,170 Afer members held the multi-support contract at the end of 2022. Still highly anticipated, the Afer rate was up to an exceptional figure and was systematically above average. This will not be the case this year, the long-awaited average will be around 2.5%.

9 – Millevie Essentielle (BPCE)

BPCE recorded no less than 632,481 contracts for its Millevie Essentielle life insurance at the end of 2022. Millevie Essentielle is available in two versions offering performance between 2.15% and 3.76% in 2023, depending on the portion invested in units of account.

10 – LCL Life (LCL)

The subsidiary of Crdit Agricole, Predica, has simplified its life insurance offer since 2018 by articulating it around the range LCL Life. The fund’s remuneration range in euros is very competitive compared to banking competition: 2.80% 3.60% for the year 2023 according to the share of units of account. A formula which attracted, at the end of 2022, 618,617 customers.

Not their best rates… but very sharply rising yields

If all these contracts do not offer the same return as that of the 3% savings account, including Multiplacements 2 from BNP (which reaches 2.5% after deduction of social security contributions of 17.2%), bank contracts, very present in this top 10, are making a good comeback in 2023. They even display better performance than savings associations like Afer or Gaipare (2.30% in 2023). The year 2024, a year when insurers still have an interest in drawing on their reserves to offer good returns, should allow them to exceed 3% of the Livret A, frozen at the same rate until January 31, 2025.
