Google Maps soon more electric?
For some time now, some car manufacturers have included a so-called trip planning function. This allows the on-board software to plan a route tailored for an electric car, and the driver to access various information, starting with the number of stops planned before reaching his destination. This functionality is notably present within Android Automotive.
Strangely, the mobile version of Google Maps is not affected, but this should change soon. Indeed, the future version (11.65) of the navigation software signed Google could (finally!) be up to date and also offer a journey planner.
The “trip planner” also on smartphones
In this way, electric vehicles that are not powered by Android Automotive will also be able to benefit from the benefits of planning, through the user’s smartphone. When entering a route, the user will simply have to choose the type of vehicle engine (an option already available), which will allow the application to identify the most fuel- or energy-efficient route.
Google says this new feature will have the same options as the Android Automotive version, including battery capacity. It remains to be seen how this estimate of the remaining autonomy will be managed…
On the interface side, again, everything should be very similar to what is already offered with Android Automotive. The application will take care of proposing an additional stop if necessary and warning the driver if there are no compatible terminals at the next stations. Everything should be integrated into a future update of Google Maps.
