Doctolib, the most valued French unicorn after raising half a billion euros


Thanks to a funding round of 500 million euros, Doctolib exceeds Back Market which had reached a valuation of 5.1 billion euros in January 2022. The company plans to recruit 3,500 additional people over the next quarter.

After a slightly calmer month of February, French Tech resumed its race to the top. Indeed, Doctolib, flagship of the health ecosystem widely highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic, has completed a funding round of 500 million euros. The operation, which mixes equity and debt, was carried out with Eurazeo and Bpifrance. It allows the unicorn to become the most valued French start-up, up to 5.8 billion euros. Doctolib thus exceeds Back Market which had reached a valuation of 5.1 billion euros in January following a fundraising of 450 million euros.

With this major operation, the company plans to recruit 3,500 additional people over the next five years. In 2022 alone, 700 positions are open. If the recruitment schedule is kept, Doctolib should bring together 6,000 employees by 2027, compared to 2,500 employees at present.

60 million users

To date, the unicorn claims 60 million users in France, Germany and Italy. The attendance of the platform has been mainly boosted for two years by tests and vaccinations to fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Now well known to the general public, the company’s services are also increasingly used by healthcare professionals. These are now 300,000, including more than 60,000 independent doctors, 13,000 dentists and 8,000 physiotherapists, who use the platform to manage their appointments.

In order to continue its ascent, Doctolib had already indicated that it wanted to invest 300 million euros in 2022 to improve its solutions and develop new services for patients and healthcare professionals. In particular, the company plans to launch Doctolib Team, a secure and encrypted messaging system intended to facilitate the coordination of care between healthcare professionals. In addition, the company wants to go from 2 million dematerialized medical prescriptions each month via its platform to 6 million by the end of the year. To strengthen itself, Doctolib also acquired the start-up Tanker, specializing in end-to-end encryption, at the start of the year. The French unicorn aims for profitability within two or three years.
