France Télévisions wants as many female directors as directors for its documentaries, in order to offer “a plural view of the world”, according to a press release dated Monday, co-signed by Scam and Garrd, two societies of authors and directors. The public television group even sets itself a goal: to achieve parity by 2023.

41% of France Télévisions documentaries are made by women. A figure still too low according to the public television group. He announces in a press release that he wants to reach 50% of female directors in the documentaries he offers. A goal that France Télévisions wants to achieve very quickly: in 2023. Or next year. “Equality is a fight that requires counting and setting goals: this has been the group’s line of conduct, for several years and in all types of programs”, explains Delphine Ernotte, the president of France Télévisions, in a press release.

Science and history still dominated by directors

Going from 41% to 50% of female directors seems like an easy goal. But France Télévisions recognizes that the share of female directors drops to 20% in certain documentary genres, in particular for scientific, history and discovery films. France Télévisions promises “particular vigilance” in these areas.

France Télévisions confirms its findings and its objective on the “situation of imbalance between directors and directors” in its documentaries in a press release co-signed by two societies of authors and directors: the Civil Society of Multimedia Authors (SCAM) and the Guild authors and directors of reports and documentaries (GARRD).
