Does dreaming of being pregnant indicate a desire for a child?

Last night you dreamed that you were pregnant and since then you have wondered if your body wants to send you a message. It's the case. But not necessarily what you think.

In the Middle Ages, it was customary to say that when a woman dreamed that she was pregnant, there was a chance that a baby was actually on the way. Well, sometimes it was. And often not. Because no, dreams of pregnancy are not guided by our uterus which would command our subconscious to give a scripted announcement in due form. On the other hand, dreaming of being pregnant, that you are going to give birth or soon give birth to a little girl or a baby boy conceal many symbolisms and meanings that experts and shrinks have looked at extensively throughout history.

Scenario

To dream of being pregnant can manifest in many ways. In their dream, the dreamer may be happy, unhappy, a few weeks pregnant (in their first, second, or third trimester) as full term, "staged" throughout the development of their pregnancy until the end of their pregnancy. childbirth, or simply at a specific stage in the child's development, announcing the news to horrified or delighted relatives …

In short, there are many scenarios that play out a pregnancy experienced by the dreamer. It is not uncommon for this type of dream to be had by women who can no longer give birth to a child, but also by men surprised to dream that they will give birth. When we look at the testimonies of men or women confronted with this particular dreaming experience, many describe a similar scenario unfolding, which could be described as the “classic dream” of pregnancy: the person is pregnant. months old, filled with immense happiness and caressing her belly which she observes with serenity, without fear, when she is not admiring it in a mirror. Sometimes relatives surround her, to whom she is about to announce this experience as good news, a sign of an upcoming birth.

Symbolic

Dreaming of being pregnant is often linked to dreams in which the Earth, a round object or even the female breast appears to us, symbols of projects, creativity or change. But if we go into more detail on the symbolism of this type of dream, as often, two schools clash.
According to the Freudian interpretation, dreaming of being pregnant has to do with the Oedipus complex. A woman who dreams that she is going to be the mother of a child would have the unconscious desire that it be her father's. If it is a man who is placed in a situation of future pregnancy (especially if he cannot manage to break the news), it would mean that he is in pain for being a man, badly in his manhood to that moment of his life.
For Jungians, dreaming of being pregnant has to do with existence, its development, its progression, the birth of a new chapter in life. To dream of a pregnancy then has to do with what holds projects, change, creativity, progression, birth or rebirth.
In Islam, to dream of being pregnant for a woman is the pledge of a desire for activity and success, and above all a sign of a great change to come. For a man, we find similarities with the Jungian interpretation since it would mean that the dreamer is anxious to talk about his problems to the world.

Meaning

It is always difficult to give a strict interpretation of a dream, as we have seen that the dream of pregnancy can take completely different forms. Among the "special" situations, whether they concern a male or female dreamer, we have for example:

  • dreaming of a happy pregnancy because you have a real desire for a baby : While this is certainly not the case with all pregnancy dreamers, let's not put this specific case aside. When we long to get pregnant during the day (or become a father in the case of a man), such an idea is bound to run through our heads and can then give ideas to the scripts of our nights.
  • dreaming of being pregnant when you are already pregnant : according to some, the dream could then mean that the work will go well
  • dreaming of being pregnant with other pregnant women : it means that a common project of our life is coming to fruition.
  • dreaming that you have a miscarriage : while the meanings can be diverse, it often means that we have experienced a recent failure, an aborted project that has generated frustration and sadness in us.
  • dreaming of giving birth : this symbolizes the upcoming outcome of a work that is close to our hearts.

In general, the meanings of dreams of pregnancy, whether or not they result in childbirth, have a close relationship with the transitions of our lives, whether they are our couple relationships (a marriage in preparation, changes that disturb us, a questioning of its future), our professional or personal activities. Whatever our specific situation, we feel at a turning point and, whether we live it with anguish or happiness, and it then manifests itself in the form of an unborn child who comes to titillate us while we sleep.
