Announced in early June at WWDC 2023, the MacBook Air 15, like its little brother, does without any active dissipation system to be the laptop thinnest 15-inch speaker on the market today. A doctrine which would however have its limits in terms of cooling.
Does the brand new MacBook Air 15 have a tendency to heat up a little too much in intensive use? This is what some of the first tests of the device point to, and in particular the one published by The Verge (from the source of this article), which evokes a noticeable overheating of the keyboard in certain contexts of use.
The thinnest 15 inch on the market…
” The MacBook Air always heats up (…). The keyboard, although usable, was warm », notes Monica Chin for The Verge, specifically evoking the upper part of the keyboard and the flat area between the keyboard and the hinge. According to her, this heating was especially noticeable during the benchmarks. ” If you are one of those who want to buy this device thinking of using it to export videos from time to time, take good note of it. “Says the journalist, making it clear, however, that the MacBook Air 15 did not suffer from this problem during more traditional use, such as web browsing on Google Chrome.
An observation that we generally share about the MacBook Air 15, received on loan a few days ago, and which we are currently testing. Our first benchmarks have indeed allowed us to notice a noticeable heating (but not critical either) on the top of the keyboard and at the level of the hinge. However, this problem is only observable during intensive use of the computer, but we still notice that it occurs quite quickly. As soon as we return to a more common use, the heating is however non-existent or almost.
… does he pay for his absence of a fan?
If the MacBook Air 15 does not escape heating, it is because the device does not include an active dissipation system. Understand by this that it does not carry any fan. This bias allows it both to operate in the most complete of silences (regardless of the context of use), but also to be at this stage the thinnest 15-inch laptop on the market. With this product, Apple has consciously chosen silence and finesse in cooling.
This approach is, however, expected on the Air range, which has been going without fans for a few years now. It is also a way for Apple to kindly guide advanced users towards its MacBook Pro, which are more powerful thanks to their dissipation capabilities, among other things.
