NEW YORK (Reuters) – Donald Trump was ordered by a federal jury on Friday to pay $83.3 million (76.75 million euros) in damages to journalist E. Jean Carroll for defamation.

The former president announced on his Truth Social platform that he would challenge the decision on appeal.

Now 80 years old, E. Jean Carroll filed a complaint in November 2019 against Donald Trump five months after the latter denied having raped her in the fitting room of a Manhattan department store in the 1990s .

She claimed at least $10 million for moral and professional damage, claiming that Donald Trump had “ruined” her reputation as a respected journalist.

Last May, seized by another complaint, a jury had already sentenced the former president to $5 million in damages for sexual assault and defamation.

During the trial on Friday, Donald Trump continued to deny knowing his victim, denouncing as usual a witch hunt, and left the courtroom during the pleadings of E. Jean Carroll’s lawyer.
