(sda) The Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund lost the play-off first leg at home against Glasgow Rangers 2:4. So BVB needs a clear win in the second leg next week to advance to the round of 16.

For Manuel Akanji in particular, it was a European Cup evening to forget. Dortmund’s Swiss central defender had to be substituted in the 55th minute, seconds after fellow defender Dan-Axel Zagadou scored an own goal to make the Scots 4-1. Akanji didn’t look good before the 3-0; the goalie Gregor Kobel had no chance with all goals.

Thanks to the two goals in the second half by Jude Bellingham (51st) and Raphaël Guerrero (82nd), a push into the round of 16 remains possible. After the disappointing first-round knockout in the Champions League, Marco Rose’s team has set itself the goal of winning the Europa League.

FC Barcelona is aiming for the same. After the 1-1 at home, the Catalans do not go into the second leg against Napoli with an ideal starting position. Ferran Torres equalized after just under an hour with a hand penalty.

(sda) The 21-year-old Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen improved the indoor world record over 1500 m by 44 hundredths to 3:30.60 minutes at the indoor athletics meeting in Liévin (FRA).

Ingebrigtsen thus erased the record of Ethiopian Samuel Tefera, who ran the 1500 m in Birmingham three years ago in 3:31.04 minutes. Ingebrigtsen became Olympic champion in the 1500m last summer in Tokyo.

Another Tokyo Olympic champion, Marcell Jacobs of Italy, beat Americans Cravont Charleston (6.52) and Elijah Hall (6.57) in the 60m sprint in 6.50 seconds. Jacobs, the sensational Olympic champion over 100 m, is aiming for the indoor world title in Belgrade in March.

Tennis: No further semifinals for Jil Teichmann

(sda) Jil Teichmann (WTA 35) was eliminated at the WTA 500 tournament in Dubai with 2: 6, 7: 5, 4: 6 in the quarterfinals against the Russian Veronika Kudermetowa (WTA 31).

This means that Teichmann is denied another semi-final qualification in Dubai. A year ago, the 24-year-old Swiss defeated Petra Kvitova, Ons Jabeur and Coco Gauff to reach the last four in Dubai. This time Teichmann even celebrated four wins with two defeats in qualifying and the main draw (in the last round of qualifying and in the quarter-finals).

Despite the missed semi-final chance, Teichmann will leave the Emirates with good feelings. Since March 2021, she has survived more than one round in only one tournament. And that one tournament – a final qualifier at a Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati with victories over Naomi Osaka, Belinda Bencic and Karolina Pliskova – didn’t fit in at all with the other results. Before Dubai, Teichmann only won one single in five tournaments.

In the world rankings, Jil Teichmann will drop from 35th to 41st next Monday.

With a record of 28 wins and 30 losses, the Hawks remain 10th in the Eastern Conference. The gap to eighth-ranked Brooklyn is three wins.

Bayern Munich prevented the worst from happening in the Champions League round of 16 first leg. Thanks to a late goal from Kingsley Coman, the German champions drew 1-1 at Salzburg.

A few days after the 2:4 in Bochum, Bayern Munich again showed major weaknesses in defense. Throughout the season, the German champions were repeatedly caught off guard by Salzburg’s counterattacks. One of those lightning-fast advances brought the 1-0 through Chikwubuike Adamu in the 21st minute. The former St. Gallen had come on for the ailing Noah Okafor ten minutes earlier.

For a long time, Adamu’s goal seemed to be the only one and gave Bayern Munich their first away defeat in the European Cup since September 2017. Then Kingsley Coman, Bayern’s most active player, managed to equalize in the 90th minute, which took some of the pressure off the favorites’ shoulders before the second leg in three weeks’ time in front of their own fans.

Salzburg, who lost 6-2 to Bayern Munich at the same venue last season, would not have stolen the home win. The Austrians bothered the favorites wherever they could and always looked for the most direct path to the goal of Sven Ulreich, the replacement for the injured Bayern goalie Manuel Neuer. Shortly after the 0:1 Ulreich prevented the second goal with a strong save.

Bayern’s three-man defense faltered again and again. Too often she was on her own. Salzburg made a safer impression than Bayern, who were obviously not prepared for such resistance or at least found no answer to it for a long time. With their aggressive demeanor, Salzburg kept Bayern’s strikers away from the goal of Swiss Philipp Köhn, who had his best action in the 75th minute with a save against Serge Gnabry. Little was missing and Salzburg would have celebrated a prestigious victory in their first appearance in the knockout round of the Champions League.

Liverpool FC, who, like Bayern Munich, had played flawlessly through the preliminary round with six wins, achieved another success. Thanks to a header from substitute Roberto Firmino after the break after a corner kick (75′) and a goal from Mohamed Salah (83′), England won 2-0 at Inter Milan. The defeat was unfortunate for the Italians, who are in the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in ten years. They were more active for long stretches and were unlucky when Hakan Calhanoglu shot the crossbar in the 16th minute.

Salzburg – Bayern Munich 1: 1 (1: 0). Gates: 21. Adamu 1:0. 90. Coman 1:1.

Inter Milan – Liverpool 0:2 (0:0). Gates: 75 Firmino 0-1. 83 Salah 0-2.

(sda) The Nashville Predators lost for the third straight game in the NHL on Tuesday. Roman Josi’s team, who gave the assist to the 1-1 after 43 minutes, suffered a 4-1 defeat against Washington.

Match winner for the Capitals was Alexander Ovechkin with his 30th and 31st goals of the season. This was the 16th time that the Russian forward scored at least 30 goals in NHL qualification. Only the Canadian striker Mike Gartner, who was active until 1998, is ahead of Ovechkin in these statistics with 17 seasons.

Sidney Crosby also reached a milestone. The 34-year-old Canadian center scored his 500th goal in NHL qualifying in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 5-4 overtime win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Crosby is the 46th player to reach that mark.

Alexander Ovechkin is the match winner for Washington with two goals.

(dpa) Kylian Mbappé has put Paris Saint-Germain on course for the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a last-minute goal. The exceptional striker courted by Real Madrid hurt Los Blancos late on Tuesday night and scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of added time to make it 1-0 in the first leg of the round of 16. The multiple world footballer Lionel Messi had previously missed the best chance for the superior French, in the 62nd minute the Argentine failed with a foul on the strong Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Manchester City, on the other hand, can almost certainly plan for the quarter-finals of the premier class. At Sporting Lisbon, the English experienced an extremely relaxed evening and easily prevailed 5-0. Riyad Mahrez (7th minute), Bernardo Silva (17th/44th), Phil Foden (32nd) and Raheem Sterling (58th) scored the goals for coach Pep Guardiola’s team.

The two second legs will take place on March 9th.

(sda/dpa) The Young Boys are back in action just before the winter transfer window closes. The Swiss champions are loaning Edimilson Fernandes from Mainz until the end of the season. In the Bundesliga, where Fernandes was recently loaned to Arminia Bielefeld, the 25-year-old has only been used sporadically. He has played eight games this season, most recently at the end of November.

The polyvalent midfielder, who has played 22 times for the Swiss national team and can also be used in central defence, should provide relief in the Bernese squad after the departures and injury-related absences of several regular players.

In addition to Fernandes, Mainz is also letting striker Adam Szalai move to Switzerland. And apparently to FC Basel. As the “Bild” reports on Tuesday, the Hungarian has terminated his contract with Rheinhessen, which is due to expire in the summer, and is committed to the former Swiss series champion until 2023. Szalai was recently substituted on twice at FSV after missing a long time injured.
