A new company has just emerged in the field of cybersecurity. Called DoubleYou, it aims to help other security specialists strengthen the protection of Apple devices.
This firm is the result of a collaboration between two cybersecurity experts: Patrick Wardle, former employee of the National Security Agency (NSA), and his partner Mikhail Sosonkin, former offensive security researcher at Apple.
They started from an observation. As Macs become more and more favored in the enterprise, the lack of quality security products for macOS and iPhones, compared to Windows, is increasingly palpable. This is especially true with the increasing prevalence and complexity of online threats. With this in mind, the two men want to develop defense tools intended for companies, so that they can integrate them into their security solutions.
Defense modules to integrate into security solutions
DoubleYou uses an innovative approach to achieve its goals. Its co-founders are indeed inspired by the practices of hackers. While several offensive cybersecurity companies offer modular products, the DoubleYou team wants to employ the same tactics, but with defensive tools.
“ Can we adopt the same model of democratizing security, but from a defensive perspective, developing individual capabilities that we can then license and other companies can integrate into their security products? » summarizes Patrick Wardle in an interview given to TechCrunch.
Thus, DoubleYou modules will offer various functionalities, such as analyzing new processes to detect and block untrusted codes, monitoring abnormal DNS traffic to spot malware and detecting attempts to access the webcam and on the microphone. This approach will allow customers to choose the components best suited to their specific needs, while providing effective protection against constantly evolving threats.
Ransomware and malware detection tools
Wardle and Sosonkin also plan to develop tools to detect cryptocurrency miners and ransomware as well as monitor software seeking to become persistent, a typical behavior of malware. Their goal is to provide businesses with the necessary means to strengthen their security posture and fight against cyber threats.
“ We don’t need to use new technology to make this work. What we need is to take the available tools and place them in the right place », specifies Mikhail Sosonkin. Their solutions will be incorporated into other security products for Apple devices and operating systems to expand the scope of protection they provide.
