The Rorschach District Court is in the focus of international media and international politics. Around 30 media professionals from home and abroad were present in St. Gallen when the alleged Lukashenko aide arrived in front of the courthouse. There were also representatives of human rights organizations and two private plaintiffs, daughters of the disappeared opposition members.
The defendant from Belarus seemed to be entangled in contradictions in his statements on the first day of the trial. The judge obviously doubted his statements. The questioning lasted the entire morning. The judge highlighted contradictions from previous interviews. The defendant justified this several times with translation errors.
The defendant is said to have been part of a Belarusian special unit. At least that was what the alleged delinquent said. Because of the stories that kidnappings and murders were carried out unprepared, the judge questioned the professionalism of the special unit.
He told the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) that the actions had been prepared for weeks. “A contradiction,” said the judge. The defendant’s answer: “I didn’t say that.” He also denied further statements he had made to the SEM.
The defendant apologized
The court also asked the defendant to be convicted and sentenced to several years in prison for extortion in Belarus after the turn of the millennium. “You were not only the super agent, but also an ordinary criminal,” said the judge.
The day of the trial in St. Gallen
At the end of the questioning, the alleged Lukashenko aide said: “I apologize to the relatives. I deeply regret my actions.” In addition to the NGO, other non-governmental organizations and relatives of the victims also filed reports.
The prosecutor also noticed inconsistencies
The public prosecutor considered the accused’s confession to be credible, even if he pointed out that today’s appearance had given him doubts. For example, because statements about facts that are backed up with dates do not correspond. The impression is ambivalent, but essentially the statements are the same, said the public prosecutor in his plea.
He sees involvement in the crime as proven because the contradictions would concern secondary scenes. The public prosecutor therefore requested a conviction for multiple enforced disappearances of a person. The sentence should be three years’ imprisonment, one of which must be carried out without fail. There should be no expulsion from the country.
Lawyer also demands compensation
In his plea, the lawyer for the daughters of the disappeared opposition members spoke not only about the crimes, but also about the structures in Belarus. A parliamentary investigation by the Council of Europe showed that the three opposition members were probably killed.
The whole world seemed to know what had happened. And yet the perpetrators were never convicted, but remained in power in Belarus, the lawyer expressed the thoughts of a daughter. He also requested a guilty verdict. He also demanded compensation of 200,000 francs plus interest for each of his two daughters. The trial continues on Wednesday with the plea from the official defense attorney.
