After eight years, the British hit series “Downton Abbey” could be celebrating a comeback. Filming is said to have already started.
It could be the comeback of the year: Eight years after the last episode was broadcast, according to insiders, the historical drama “Downton Abbey” will return to TV screens with a seventh season. As the British “Daily Mail” reports, filming has already begun.
Strict secrecy on the set of “Downton Abbey”
“Filming has been going on for a few weeks now, it’s all very, very secret,” a source close to the project tells the newspaper. The actors working on the set were “required to sign non-disclosure agreements”. However, there is great excitement surrounding the return of the historical drama, according to the insider.
The first speculations about a comeback of the British series were already raised in May 2023, when “The Mail on Sunday” suggested that the makers of “Downton Abbey” were hoping for a revival of the series. Series creator Julian Fellowes also did not rule out a comeback of the historical drama at the beginning of the year.
Series makers rely on familiar faces
Even if there is no official confirmation about the cast yet, the makers of the series are said to be “excited” about the cast. It is of course hoped that well-known faces such as Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern and Joanne Froggatt, who have already appeared in the last six seasons and two film spin-offs, will also be seen again.
“Downton Abbey” was broadcast on the British TV channel ITV from 2010 to 2015, and insiders assume that the channel will do its utmost to prevent the new season from going to competitors such as Netflix or Amazon. It is not yet known when exactly viewers will see the seventh season. But it could happen as early as the end of 2024.
