The successful British historical series “Downton Abbey” about the aristocratic Crawley family has so far had a total of 52 episodes in six seasons. The two feature films “Downton Abbey” and “Downton Abbey II: A New Era” followed in 2019 and 2022. While rumors were circulating in February of this year that the series would be continued with a new, seventh season, actress Imelda Staunton (68) has now revealed that a third film will be released instead.

Imelda Staunton announces final “Downton Abbey” film

Staunton had this information elicited from presenter Zoe Ball (53) in a BBC radio interview on March 20th. When asked whether fans can expect more “Downton Abbey,” the actress, also known for the royal series “The Crown,” answered according to the Daily Mirror literally: “Exactly. This will be the… last… film. Here you go.”

Staunton did not reveal any further details about the potential third “Downton Abbey” movie in the interview. However, it can be assumed that the series’ regular cast will also return for a possible final film. The first movie “Downton Abbey” in particular was extremely successful financially, grossing a staggering sum of around 195 million US dollars at the worldwide box office. Part two still did more than decently, grossing over $92 million. Actress Staunton only joined the cast for the movies. She plays the character Lady Bagshaw.
