Dramatic accident – 34-year-old fell into river with excavator

On Monday morning, a 34-year-old slipped into the Enns with an excavator near St. Gallen (Liezen district). He was able to save himself and was only slightly injured.

The excavator driver from a construction company was busy securing slopes. At around 11.40 a.m., the 34-year-old from the Spital an der Drau district was driving an excavator on a path right next to the Enns. Suddenly the excavator started to slip and despite the driver’s attempts to prevent this, the machine slipped into the Enns. Due to the power plant there, the Enns is about five meters deep at this point. The excavator driver was able to break the window of the driver’s cabin with an emergency hammer, free himself through the hole from the sinking excavator and save himself to the bank. When he climbed out of the excavator, he sustained cuts and abrasions, but was otherwise uninjured. The 34-year-old was given initial care by the Red Cross and taken to a doctor. Subsequently, the fire departments deployed in Weißenbach an der Enns, Altenmarkt near St. Gallen, Steyr (crane truck), Kleinreifling (with fire boat), Rottenmann (with boat and Divers) and large ramming built an oil barrier and the excavator was rescued using a crane.
