Drastic situation – expert warns: “The shortage of doctors is blatant!”

After the report by “Krone” that patients in the Klagenfurt clinic had been sent home untreated, other affected people and doctors came forward.

“I was supposed to have the surgery in August, was prepped, given IVs and a catheter and wheeled outside the operating room where I waited in my aisle bed for four hours. After that, I learned that the procedure had to be postponed because there was no doctor available. And my new appointment is in mid-December!” says an affected Wolfsberger. A similar situation was also described to Team Carinthia boss Gerhard Köfer: “I know of a case where a patient was not even brought into the treatment room because no Doctor was present.” He demands clarification from health officer Beate Prettner and would also like to submit a request to the state parliament regarding this matter. I check the Kabeg homepage at least once a week. There are an average of 40 doctor’s positions advertised. There are often some departments where 13 doctors are wanted,” says Petra Preiss, spokeswoman for the employed doctors in the Medical Association. Beds and operating rooms often have to be closed due to a lack of staff. “The staff is working at the limit. And the colleagues who step in are insulted by patients who are sent home again – and rightly so. Their irritation is understandable,” says Preiss.Tense situation“There isn’t a shortage of doctors in all areas. But in general it can be said that we have a tense personnel situation, as in all other federal states. Of course, attempts are made to compensate for employee absences as best as possible,” says Kabeg press spokeswoman Nathalie Trost.
