KINSHASA (Reuters) – The party of the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, is expected to win the legislative elections in December, preliminary results showed on Sunday.

The Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) won 66 seats, compared to 35 in the 2018 elections, according to preliminary results, which could allow Félix Tshisekedi to keep the coalition in power by giving him the necessary majority to appoint a new government.

According to provisional results announced early Sunday by the National Electoral Commission, parties led by some of Félix Tshisekedi’s allies also won several seats.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (Ceni) confirmed at the end of December the re-election for a new five-year term of Félix Tshisekedi.

Opposition parties and independent observers have raised concerns about a lack of transparency, particularly due to the conditions in which the elections took place.
