Nearly 180 kilos of cocaine were seized Thursday in Brest in the hull of a cargo ship that arrived a few hours earlier from Brazil, the Atlantic maritime prefecture announced on Thursday evening February 16. The 178 kilos of cocaine discovered “were packed in bundles and hidden in the hull of the ship”, according to the press release from the maritime prefecture. The freighter, the North Capellaflying the Panamanian flag and measuring 230 meters long, was carrying 15,000 tons of soybeans.

“Soon after docking, the vessel was checked by the Atlantic Maritime Security Platoon (investigator, divers, canine team) and a team from the Coast Guard Customs patrol boat Kermorvan”, said the same source. An investigation by the research section of the maritime gendarmerie and the maritime gendarmerie group of the Atlantic is underway under the direction of the Parquet de Brest, the statement said.

Last week, on the night of Thursday to Friday, more than 180 kilos of cocaine hidden in the hull of a cargo ship, also from Brazil, had been seized by the Lorient coast guard. The drugs were apparently hidden in the same way as on the North Capellain the water intake boxes (“seachest”) of the hull, used to pump sea water according to the needs of the ship.
