Always highly professional and exemplary, the Royals carry out their duties and appointments in England as well as in Europe. But in the past few years, Duchess Catherine, Prince William or Princess Victoria have violated one or the other rule – of course for their children.
Parents around the world know that things don’t always go according to plan with children. This is particularly noticeable with members of the royal family, because they are still trying to adhere to a strict royal protocol and to maintain their role model function. The fact that this does not always succeed has been observed with amusement several times in the past. Again and again, royal offspring bring their parents, who are trying to keep their composure, to disregard official regulations and royal protocols. Here are a few heartwarming examples:
Prince George’s long night playing football
A big dream came true for Prince George, 8, when he attended the European Championship finals in July 2021. He was spellbound for his home team when it faced Italy. The game started at 8:00 p.m. and went into overtime with a penalty shoot-out. Actually, the eldest of Prince William, 39, and Duchess Catherine, 39, should have been in bed by this time. Fortunately, he was already on summer vacation and so his parents turned a blind eye. Unfortunately, the royal offspring also had to witness the defeat of his favorite team and was comforted by Papa William after the final whistle.
Lady Louise Windsor’s visit to “Strictly Come Dancing”
Lady Louise Windsor, 18, not only seems to be a real horse and carriage fan, she also obviously loves dancing. The alleged favorite granddaughter of the Queen and her mother, Sophie von Wessex, 56, could be seen enthusiastically in the audience of the dance show “Strictly Come Dancing”, the British counterpart to “Let’s Dance”, in November 2018. According to “Hello”, she got the excursion for her 15th birthday and mother and daughter laughed, clapped and cheered on the dancing couples. But was she even allowed to sit in the audience of the show at this age? After all, one of the candidates, James Cracknell, previously revealed that he was looking forward to his son turning 16 and seeing his father on the floor.
Prince Georges and Princess Charlotte’s first day of school
Prince George was given a special reception on his first day of school in September 2017. Because Kate, who was then pregnant, suffered from severe morning sickness, Papa Prince William accompanied his eldest offspring to Thomas’s Battersea School. There he was greeted by director Helen Haslam, who held out her hand. This personal greeting does not exist for other students. But his younger sister also received this honor a few years later. 2019 was the big day for Princess Charlotte, 6, on which she, too, was greeted in the morning by Helen Haslam.
Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis at the Chelsea Flower Show
For months, Duchess Catherine, together with the architects Andrée Davies and Adam White, put a lot of heart and soul into the design of a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show 2019. Of course, the whole family should be there for the unveiling. According to the regulations of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS, German Royal Horticultural Society), however, children under five were not allowed to attend the event. But for Kate there was a special permit and so her kids explored the garden enthusiastically and especially the little Prince Louis, 3, raved through nature in delight.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte skip school for a royal wedding
Skip school with parental permission? What kid wouldn’t love that. This dream came true for Princess Charlotte and Prince George. The royals had a good reason for this, after all, a royal dream wedding was coming up. On Friday, October 12, 2018, Princess Eugenie, 31, married Jack Brooksbank, 35, at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Charlotte and George had a special task to perform at the ceremony and were allowed to walk to the altar with other flower children.
Prince George in the cockpit of an RAF aircraft
Children are rarely seen sitting in the cockpit of a Royal Air Force aircraft. Here Prince George once again benefited from his royal status. In July 2016 at the “Royal International Air Tattoo”, the largest military air show in the world in Gloucestershire, he and Papa William were allowed to inspect and even sit down on a “Red Arrow” plane.
Prince William and Prince George flew together
With their flight together with the then nine-month-old Prince George to Australia and New Zealand, William and Catherine broke the royal protocol in April 2014. Accordingly, members of the royal family should not fly together to protect the succession. In this case, the two royals are said to have previously asked Queen Elizabeth, 95, for permission. Since then, the little heir to the throne has flown numerous times with his father.
Princess Estelle rocked with Metallica
In Sweden, too, you don’t see the royal rules so closely. In July 2019, Princess Estelle, 9th Princess Victoria, 44, and Prince Daniel, 48, took their then seven-year-old daughter to a Metallica concert and were not only welcomed. After all, the age limit is usually 13 years. An exception was made for Estelle, but she saw the rock concert from a special booth with controlled sound.
Zara Tindall visits Royal Ascot
Zara Tindall, 40, has been attending the annual Royal Ascot racing week for many years. In 1989 she saw the spectacle for the very first time at the tender age of eight. There was a strict rule for the event that prohibited children under the age of 18 from attending the horse race. As the only child she was allowed to visit Royal Ascot at the side of her mother, Princess Anne, 71. Since then, however, the rules have been relaxed and children under 18 are allowed to attend when accompanied by an adult.
