It was probably a sad honor for Duchess Catherine: The wife of Prince William took the place of Queen Elizabeth on the balcony of the Foreign Office in London during this year’s Remembrance Sunday. The monarch had to cancel her participation on the morning of November 14th due to a back problem.

Duchess Catherine, 39, looked appropriately serious and almost withdrawn as she watched Prince Charles, 73, Prince William, 39, and Princess Anne, 71, framed by Duchess Camilla, 74, and Sophie von Wessex, 56 , and Prince Edward, 57, laid their wreaths at the cenotaph in honor of the favors. A moment of sadness deepened this year by the unexpected absence of Queen Elizabeth, 95. The monarch has to cancel her promised participation in the service at short notice. Buckingham Palace announced that she had sprained her back, and Her Majesty regretted her absence very much.

Catherine was now allowed to take her place on the balcony. A surprise, if one would have rather suspected the wife of the next heir to the throne at that point. But Duchess Camilla obviously preferred the place at the side of her step-daughter-in-law. A gesture that shows greatness.

Concern for Queen Elizabeth grows

Meanwhile, the British are worried about their queen. In the past few weeks, worrying news about the state of health of the 95-year-olds reached the public. Hospitalization and the urgent recommendation of the doctors to take a little rest added to the feeling of concern.

However, the palace emphasized on Sunday that the queen’s back complaints were unrelated to her recent complaints or her night in the hospital. “It is the most unfortunate time for Her Majesty, who recently took a short break for a few days at Sandringham in Norfolk and felt rested and refreshed on her return to Windsor Castle,” a source told Mirror, clarifying: “In a conversation with royal doctors it was decided that a back sprain while driving and standing still is not beneficial.”

“Your Majesty is deeply disappointed”

Queen Elizabeth herself is said to be anything but happy about the situation. “Your Majesty is deeply disappointed to have missed the ceremony.” The monarch has only missed six Memorial Sunday events in her 69-year reign – four due to royal tours abroad and two when she was pregnant.

As in previous years, Prince Charles laid the wreath at the cenotaph in the name of the Queen, while daughter-in-law Catherine was the first to have a focal point of what she will experience one day as a woman at the side of the British king.
