Due to discriminatory language: Mary Poppins’ age rating is raised

ENTERTAINMENT

A film for young and old that has thrilled audiences for decades – that’s how most Disney fans remember “Mary Poppins”. However, it has now been noticed in Great Britain that the film has not aged perfectly.

Every year on Good Friday, “Mary Poppins” is a topic in the media. The reason: Disney’s classic is on the list of films that, according to the FSK, may not be shown publicly on this Christian day of mourning. The fact that the cheerful family musical is mentioned in the same breath as “Rambo” always causes amusement.

The British Board of Film Classification, Britain’s answer to the FSK, wasn’t quite as amused when “Mary Poppins” was subjected to further scrutiny. Two cases of discriminatory language attracted negative attention, which now ensures that “Mary Poppins” receives a higher age rating.

This change currently only affects Great Britain, but it could also happen in Germany. A statement from the BBFC said:

In “Mary Poppins” the discriminatory term “Hottentot” is used twice. Although “Mary Poppins” has historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned and ultimately exceeds our acceptable language guidelines [für eine Freigabe ab 0]. We have therefore rated the film PG due to discriminatory language.

British Board of Film Classification

“PG” in the UK means that some scenes are not suitable for children under 8 years of age. In Germany, “Mary Poppins” is still available for ages 0 and up, but the German version also says “Hottentots” – a term that is seen as racially offensive for the Khoikhoi, a group of indigenous people in southwest Africa.

Disney itself would probably have to demand a re-examination of “Mary Poppins” in Germany; the FSK is unlikely to take action here on its own. Disney itself naturally benefits from the lowest possible release, but Disney+ occasionally warns about outdated content. In the case of “Mary Poppins,” however, Disney+ only refers to the depiction of tobacco products.
