Dune 2: New voice for Baron Harkonnen – why does Stellan Skarsgård have a new voice actor?

Three years passed between the filming of “Dune” and “Dune 2”, but actually the two films seem to be made from a single mold. No coincidence of course, after all, the second part from 2024 begins exactly where “Dune” ended in 2021.

But one aspect is different, at least in the German version of the film. Baron Wladimir Harkonnen, played by Stellan Skarsgård, no longer has his dubbed voice from the first film in “Dune 2”. How come?

New regular speaker for Stellan Skarsgård

Since 1996, Detlef Bierstedt, who is known in Germany as the voice of George Clooney, among other things, has been heard regularly as Stellan Skarsgård. From 2010 onwards, Bierstedt became Skarsgård’s regular speaker; with a few exceptions, he was always heard in the German version when Skarsgård was on screen – including in “Dune”.

However, in 2022, at the age of 70, Bierstedt announced his retirement from the dubbing business. From now on, Bierstedt’s voice can only be heard in audio books; Skarsgård, Clooney and Jonathan Frakes have had to do without his voice since then.

For this reason, Douglas Welbat now speaks the Baron in “Dune 2”, he was also the German voice of Stellan Skarsgård in the series “Star Wars: Andor”. The trained ear will certainly notice the change in speaker, but it is nowhere near as disturbing as Arnold Schwarzenegger’s in “Escape Plan”.
