Dune 2: the duration of the sequel promises an epic science fiction spectacle!

A few weeks ago, rumors were rife about the length of “Dune: Part Two” which would exceed that of its predecessor. It is now confirmed…

A second spectacle of epic proportions awaits us: with less than a month before the release of Dune: Part Two, we now know its running time.

In 2021, Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Arrival) presented us with a breathtaking science fiction masterpiece with his remake of Dune. It then seemed difficult to do better. However, the director has since declared himself that he found his sequel much better and more lively than the first part…

It is already clear that Dune 2 will surpass its predecessor on one specific point: its duration. It’s official, the sequel will last 165 minutes and 37 seconds (or approximately 2 hours and 46 minutes) – and therefore ten minutes longer than the first part! This is confirmed by the Irish Film Classification Office (via FilmStarts).

This duration marks a new record for Denis Villeneuve : Indeed, Dune 2 will be the longest film of the Canadian filmmaker’s career to date. The first position was previously occupied by Blade Runner 2049 with a duration of 164 minutes.

In total, his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking first novel will last just over five hours – with a third part already planned. Dune 2 therefore adapts the second half of the book, and will pick up the story exactly where we left off. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who has found refuge with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen, prepares for an inevitable war with the Harkonnen, who wiped out his family. Haunted by dark premonitions, he finds himself confronted with the greatest dilemma of all: choosing between the love of his life and the destiny of the universe. The feature film is also expected to contain many more action scenes than its predecessor.

A first opinion: better than the first?

It must be said Dune: Part Two is one of the most anticipated films of the year and it looks like it will also be one of the best. In any case, that’s what the very first notice that came out this week suggests.

While a private screening took place for distributors in the United States, the specialist account Empire City was clear: a “better than the first” masterpiece awaits us.

I just saw Dune: Part Two. I can say without reservation that this is INCREDIBLE, a true masterpiece of modern science fiction from Denis Villeneuve.

Asked by a user whether the sequel was better than its predecessor, Empire City later responded: “It’s much better, and yet I love the first one.” That’s promising.

In addition to Timothée Chalamet And Zendayawe will find, in the cast of this second opus, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, Javier Bardem, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista and Stephen McKinley Henderson.

Dune: Part Two will be released in French cinemas on February 28, 2024.
