Amazon is the subject of a complaint in the United States for espionage. At issue: the sale of a bathroom hook equipped with a miniature camera that is triggered at the slightest movement.
This student from Brazil experienced a particularly embarrassing mishap. While staying with an American host family in Virginia, she realizes that she has been filmed while she is busy in the bathroom of the house. How ? By one miniature camera hidden in what appears to be a simple hook to hang your towel or bathrobe. The item in question is available for sale legally on the online sales site Amazon.
The young woman filed a complaint against a man, but the judge took the opportunity to ask the question of Amazon responsibility, who unwittingly finds himself drawn into the affair. The presence of such products on the platform is far from new. Go ahead and type “spy camera” into the search bar. The results are legion: pen, alarm clock, charger, car key, external battery, smoke detector, connected watch, glasses… All these objects are equipped with a miniature camera.

No need to break the bank: the bathroom hook in question here costs €40 only. It integrates a 1080p camera which is triggered automatically as soon as it detects movement. Whether it is this object or others of the same kind, they highlight the supervision of a young childof a frail elderly person, of an animal… Nothing reprehensible in itself. Sometimes the photos suggest using it to obtain evidence of adultery or domestic violence.

Selling these miniature cameras is not illegal. On the other hand, the judge considers thatAmazon is aware of the uses that can be made of it, even those who fall under the law. The American giant says it is not responsible for what buyers do once the item is in their hands. The platform visibly prefers to focus on the trial of which it is the victim.
