East Tyrolean touring piste – “Danger to life” on the Sternabfahrt on the Hochstein

Particular caution is currently required for all tourers on Lienz’s local mountain, the Hochstein! Because of the spring-like temperatures, snow-making on the Moosalm could not be continued. According to Lienzer Bergbahnen AG (LBB), both ascents and descents over the Sternalm are strictly prohibited until Friday.

“There is a mortal danger from chunks of snow and winch ropes rolling down!” Warns LBB board member Mario Tölderer. The reason for this is easy to explain: Winch machines have to be used to prepare the star descent. Since ski tourers with sharp-edged skis regularly cross the associated snow-making hoses, this leads to considerable damage. “For this reason, we point this out and ask all ski tourers and winter hikers to refrain from climbing and descending the Sternalm run up to and including Friday.” Huge snow hills caused unanswered questions. According to the LBB, these were snow-making hills that can now be distributed due to the completed snow-making. An early push during the dew phase would have melted it off more quickly. The Board of Management asks for a little patience and understandingTölderer knows that these measures are not exactly what the local winter athletes really enjoy: “I am aware that the Hochstein, in particular, is popular with many as a ski touring mountain is popular. Nevertheless, I ask for your understanding and a few days of patience. ”The last fresh snowfall was helpful, although – as reported – it only provided relaxation on existing slopes and cross-country trails. The World Cup slope and Taxermoos are already open on the Hochstein. On Saturday, the downhill run including the lift will also go into operation. As usual, the third section can only be opened with sufficient natural snow.
