  • The return traffic from northern Italy and Ticino towards the north continued on Easter Monday.
  • In the afternoon, vehicles were queued up for nine kilometers at the Gotthard south portal.

Traffic volume increased throughout the day. Late in the evening the waiting time in Airolo was around an hour with a traffic jam of six kilometers. According to the Touring Club Switzerland (TCS), there may still be waiting times on Tuesday and the following days.

Return movement from Sunday

On Easter Sunday, traffic heading north was already backed up in front of the Gotthard Tunnel. When asked, a spokesman for the traffic information company Viasuisse said that experience shows that return traffic from the south begins around midday on Easter Sunday.

As an alternative route, traffic was also stalled on the route via San Bernardino, as the TCS reported.

Many wanted to go south – despite the rainy weather

On Good Friday, despite the unfavorable weather forecast, many wanted to go to Ticino and the cars were jammed in front of the Gotthard north portal for a length of up to twelve kilometers.

In the run-up to Easter, the Federal Roads Office (Astra) advised against leaving the motorway in traffic jams. The alternative traffic puts a strain on the population in towns along the national roads. In addition, the risk of accidents increases.
