Fraudsters use a security function of Ebay classifieds for fraud, of all things. The Berlin police warn of this. The police have therefore found an increasing number of cases of fraud in which sellers of goods on Ebay classifieds are the victims. The police describe the scam as follows:
A supposedly interested party writes to the seller. Contact is usually made via Whatsapp. The alleged interested party suggests that the payment should be made using the actually existing Ebay classifieds payment method “Pay Safely”. You can read what this payment method is all about in Ebay classifieds: Payment is now safer – partially.
But instead of processing the payment within Ebay classifieds, the scammer tries to lure his victim to an external website. The perpetrator sends the seller a link that the seller should use to enter their credit card details to receive the payment (possibly with confirmation of incoming push notifications from the bank). Finally, the credit card is then debited from abroad, especially from Russia. The seller, on the other hand, never sees any money.
The police emphasized: Ebay classifieds never asks sellers to enter credit card details and/or account balances. Only use the den for “Secure payment”.
