LInsoumise MP for Seine-Saint-Denis Clémentine Autain on Monday called “an insult” the word “ecoterrorism” that Gérald Darmanin used to depict the actions of demonstrators gathered in Deux-Sèvres to fight against a project large water reservoir. “Ecoterrorism is an insult to environmental activists, it is an insult to the victims of terrorism to associate the word terrorism with ecology”, indignantly elected, denouncing a “smokescreen intended to hide the “combat content”.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin denounced Sunday evening the “ecoterrorism” of certain activists after clashes on Saturday between demonstrators and the police in Sainte-Soline (Deux-Sèvres). “What are we going to talk about? From this term, from a very small fraction who wanted to fight it out and not from the substance of the matter, which is whether it is fair to reserve huge basins for 12 farmers who will disrupt the water cycle. , retorted Clémentine Autain.

A “police overpresence”

“It does not adapt France to the drought, it continues to engulf France in a productivist model which does not make it possible to solve the environmental issues which are ours and which benefit a very small number of farmers”, a she continued. She also denounced a “police overpresence not at all likely to calm things down” and the ban on demonstrations, despite a “just” cause. “The Minister of the Interior chooses who his number one enemies are. Environmental activists, the left, the Nupes are the number one target of the power in place, ”she concluded. “When the government doesn’t care that there are young people on the streets demanding a whole series of changes and the government does not do it and persists in climate inaction, at some point, indeed, it radicalizes”, she also analyzed.

Laurent Nuñez also speaks of “ecoterrorism”

The Paris police chief, Laurent Nuñez, was also questioned on Monday about the weekend incidents caused by environmental activists in Deux-Sèvres. “For some of them, we can call it ecoterrorism,” he assured France Info, referring to the words of Gérald Darmanin. “The intelligence services are working on these individuals because they have violent potential. A certain number of them are on file S, in the same way as Islamist terrorists, so as to be able to be followed, ”added the former boss of the DGSI (General Directorate of Internal Security). According to him, the term ecoterrorism is “obviously used, employed” in the intelligence services.

Faced with criticism from part of the political class on the words of the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez assured that “terrorism is not just attacks. These are all those illegal, reprehensible acts, prosecuted by the Penal Code, and which aims to create serious disturbances in order to sow intimidation or terror”. The Paris police chief indicated that there are in France “a few dozen individuals who are being followed for violent radicalization, including in movements which defend causes which they say are environmentalists”.
