OUAGADOUGOU (Reuters) – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has suspended Burkina Faso from its governing bodies following Monday’s military coup, two diplomatic sources said on Friday. .
Burkina Faso’s army announced on Monday that it had deposed President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, suspended the Constitution, dissolved the government and the National Assembly and closed the country’s borders, facing, according to them, a “continuous degradation” of its security.
This putsch is a new shock in the Sahel, where the Europeans, first and foremost France, are trying to fight against armed Islamist groups who are destabilizing the powers in place.
Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in West Africa despite its activity in the production of gold, has been the scene of numerous coups since 1960, the date of its independence.
