Ed Sheeran will celebrate his 30th birthday on February 17th. What many do not know about the talented musician …

It all started in bars and clubs, and now Ed Sheeran (30, "Afterglow") is one of the most successful music stars worldwide. The red-haired Brit, who celebrates his 30th birthday today, delights his fans with a soulful voice and profound lyrics. Most people are familiar with this, as well as the fact that he has released four albums, almost all of which stormed the charts in several countries. He also has four Grammys and was the UK's richest under-30 artist in 2020 with an estimated net worth of more than 230 million euros. Some things about the singer are less known …

Do you have a doctorate without a school leaving certificate?

Sheeran grew up in Framlingham, Suffolk, in eastern England, and studied various musical instruments with his older brother from an early age. He could never do much with school, as a 16-year-old he gave up in favor of his music career. In an interview with "taff" in 2017, Sheeran revealed that he had failed the German subject at school and that he still couldn't speak the language.

The fact that he still holds a doctorate is thanks to his musical skills. In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Suffolk for his "outstanding contribution to music". The singer proudly shared the milestone on Instagram.

The artist and his village

The more famous Sheeran became, the harder it was for him to find a home without being besieged by crowds. A few years ago he bought a print shop in the star district of Notting Hill in London. His neighbors are said to have been Robbie Williams (47, "Angels") and the Beckhams. But the press quickly got wind of his move. However, because it is important for the British to be able to switch off in their own four walls, he moved to the country.

Sheeran went back to his hometown. So that there are no problems with neighbors, he allegedly bought all the houses around his house and has since owned an entire property. He is said to have spent several million euros on this. In the UK, Sheeran's home is the most searched online of all celebrities in England, the Daily Mail published drone footage of Sheeran Village last year.

"I have a social phobia. I don't like being around large groups of people, which is quite ironic as I play shows in front of thousands of people. (…) Talking to people is not a problem, but if they are filming me or Staring at it gives me a strange feeling – as if I were an animal in the zoo ", the singer once revealed in an interview with the radio presenter Charlamagne tha God (42," The Breakfast Club ").

Cat man and family man

In "Sheeran Village" the singer is not only in the company of at least two cats, but also his wife Cherry Seaborn (28). The couple have known each other since school, Seaborn also grew up in Framlingham, but they lost touch. A few years later, the two are said to have met again at a party and fell in love. In January 2019 they silently and secretly said yes before they became parents of a daughter for the first time in September 2020. The little one goes by the name of Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

Not a fan of smartphones

It is not easy for anyone who wants to reach the British. Ed Sheeran has not used a smartphone for years – to the suffering of many labels, artists and friends. He can only be contacted via email. "I bought an iPad and just work with email, it means so much less stress. I don't wake up in the morning and already have 50 messages from people asking me about something. I just wake up and have a cup of tea" , revealed Sheeran in 2017 on the talk show by Ellen DeGeneres (63). When he's on the road, he only has a credit card in his pocket.

Ed Sheeran as a part-time actor?

Every now and then Ed Sheeran goes among the actors. In 2015 he played the soldier Sir Cormac for five episodes in the US series "The Bastard Executioner". In 2017 the singer had a small supporting role in the hit HBO series "Game of Thrones". Other guest appearances followed in "Bridget Jones' Baby" (2016) and "Yesterday" (2019).

Tattoos, rapping and 55 chocolate balls

What many do not know: Ed Sheeran can not only be soulful. The singer is also a talented rapper, which can be heard especially on his latest album "No. 6 Collaborations Project". The who's who of the hip rap scene is represented on the record, including Cardi B (28, "WAP"), Stormzy (27, "Own It") and Eminem (48, "Kamikaze"). The Briton has pretty much every song about the latter and has been a big fan for years. His music is "so naked and so honest".

Speaking of naked: Sheeran's body is adorned with numerous tattoos, some of which he is said to have done himself. A central motive is family, as an alleged friend of Sheeran's told the British "Mail on Sunday" last year: "Ed comes from a large Catholic family and he wants a house full of children. He has five intertwined rings on his Get a back tattoo that looks a bit like the rings from the Olympic Games. He wants to put another handprint tattoo on each ring. "

How could he keep his future offspring happy? Among other things with candy challenges. The Briton is able to put 55 Maltesers, a British chocolate candy, in their mouths at once. He put his skills to the test in 2017 in the legendary Carpool Karaoke by James Corden (42). Could anyone copy that?
